Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

Posted in Bon Appetit, Food Review on March 30, 2011 by sreeja77

Today I am going to talk about Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). Mainly I used this oil for my son’s cooking and I drink one tablespoon of EVOO with an empty stomach. EVOOs are great way to add pleasure to our cooking. I use it as salad dressing, making omelettes, stir-frying….

The majority of the world’s olive oil comes from Italy & Spain—the traditional producing countries. Countries surrounding the Mediterranean—like Greece and France are also top producers of olive oil.

There are many reasons to find out the difference between olive oils. The color, flavor and aroma differs depending on the growing regions.  Some of the oils are fruity and buttery and some has bold and peppery finish. The best way to learn the characteristics of oils is to taste them.

Crushing the ripened olives releases their oil. EVOOs are cold-pressed—a chemical-free process that involves only pressures (no heat) and has acidity level of lower than 1%.  EVOO has not undergone any treatment other than washing, crushing, decanting, centrifuging and (sometimes) filtering.

Hand picking produces a better olive oil than fruit harvested with a raker or shaker as handpicked olive oil ensures that no bad olives were mixed into the batch to destroy the flavor of the oil.

Olive oil should be stored in a cool and dark place. EVOO can be refrigerated, which will extend its life, what happens is the chilled olive oil becomes cloudy and too thick to pour. Somehow there will be some changes in the flavor too.

EVOO is not really recommended for deep-frying or cooking at very high temperatures, as the flavor of the oil tends to break down under high heat. A simple guideline how to use EVOO in cooking:-

Soft & Buttery Oil goes well for dipping breads.

Full flavored / Strong bodies are usually goes well with grilled fish and chicken, roasted vegetables, pasta and mashed potatoes.

Fruity & Peppery Oil is great with pasta and soups.

EVOO does wonders to cooking and promotes good health. Olive oil is high in monosaturated fat, Vitamin E and loaded with anti-oxidant. Monosaturated fats are good fat and our body requires this to lower cholesterol and may assist in reducing heart disease. Studies also say that these fats are believed to offer protection against certain cancers, like breast cancer and colon cancer. They are good food for heart. Our skin needs Vitamin E and EVOO is packed with it. Frequent use of olive oil has been associated with lower rates of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis and has a better control over blood sugar.

EVOOs not only add flavors to our cooking but it keeps in good health, so lets include it daily in our cooking…

Sushi

Posted in Bon Appetit, Food Review on March 26, 2011 by sreeja77

Hey, I am back almost after two weeks. Trying to find time to write my blog. Creating was so easy and fun but maintaining it is the most challenging part.

Today im gonna talk about Sushi. Sushi is considered to be a popular dish among non-Japanese. When you hear the word Suhsi, many of us imagine it is a raw fish and so yucky. I never tried sushi before coming to Kuwait, always had the fear of eating raw fish. Now, Sushi is my one of my favorite food.  Well, it is a light on your stomach and you will be suprised how delicious it is. Now lets look into the ingredients used to make sushi.

The thin, toasted seaweed sheets, called Nori, used in rolled (maki) sushi are high in Vitamin A, B-complex, Niacin and Vitamin C. It is also good for digestion.

The rice used in making sushi is still low in fat and sodium free while also being a complex carbohydrate which is needed as fuel for your body. The various fish or meats used in sushi are excellent sources of protein and minerals. The fresh, uncooked vegetables provide the vitamins and other nutrients you look for in a healthy diet. I always ask for cucumber and avocado :) .

What are the condiments being served with Sushi?

Ginger is one of my favorite spice and i include it in my tea everyday. I also drink boiled ginger water with honey. It has an abudance of health benefits. Ginger, called ‘gari’, is often served alongside sushi and helps with digestion while also fighting bacteria. This is especially of interest to those concerned with the bacteria found in uncooked meat. There you go.. have sushi with gari, eating raw fish is safe.

Wasabi, Japanese horseradish, is a green paste often offered with sushi. In the begininng i used to hate it. The taste is very strong and the worst part is you can feel the spice in your nose rather than your mouth. So the best way to start eating it is eat little and increase the portion after sometime. What made me to eat wasabi is the health benefits of it. It can kill the bacteria found in raw fish, reduce heart disease, stroke, protect against cancer and has anti-inflammatory effects.

Soya, the main ingredient in soya sauce, has been linked to lower breast cancer and fewer menopausal symptoms. Soya is a source of high quality protein, low in saturated fats and is cholesterol free. However becareful as soya sauce is high in salt. So consume moderately and live healthier.

Sushi provides 300-400 calories depending on the ingredients used. Its kind of food i enjoy eating and dont mind having it everyday! For those you have not tried yet, its worth giving it a try. Find a local sushi bar, go ahead and be bold.

Mac’s Love Joy Mineralized Blush

Posted in Look of the Day on March 5, 2011 by sreeja77
Hey ya…,
This is my first purchase of mineralised blush, Mac’s Love Joy.   I bought this few months back. I wanted to get Mac’s Dainty blush but the MUA suggested this one. I do not use this on regular basis as I didnt like it much. But somehow i thought i will use this blush to create the look for the day.
If u look at it, you may find it dark. Its a warm brown with gold pearl. The color is shimmery, highly pigmented and blends in easily. In the beginning i didn’t like it till i saw the glow on my cheek. This blush creates a gorgeous rosey brown undertones after application. Im loving this color on me!!! It’s a wonderful shade for winter & summer…
To create this look, i moisturised my face (with lots of moisturiser).
Picture below are the products that I used to create this look. I applied MAC’s moisturelush eye cream and MAC’s Studio Fix Concealer NC45 under my eyes.
Then i used Bobby Brown’s Liquid Foundation (Shade: Honey). I didn’t apply powder on top of the foundation as I wanted to create more glow on this look. Then I applied MAC’s LoveJoy on my cheek and MAC’s Sweetie Lipstick on my lips and topped it up with Clinique’s Grapefruit gloss. I am not gonna talk about my eye make-up as I think it didnt turn out well this time:(
Coming back to Mac’s Love Joy, you can see the color creates a warm glow on my skintone… Im just loving it!!!!
